Gilbert & George
Gilbert and George brought great interest generated by their mid-career retrospectives in the late 1980s and the 1990s that brought their art to Europe, China, and the United States.
Gilbert, from Italy, and George from the Uk, were continuously innovating and challenging art by using different mediums and materials.
In the above image I took a photo in some woods by my home town. I took a photo of a plant pot at home, and then of me sitting on a dustbin in my garden. As I had made a studio in my garden using white sheets, I though it would be good to use it for this as it would make selecting the subject a lot easier in photoshop. I erased the plants from the pots and pasted the image of myself onto the plant pot so it looked like I was sitting on the edge of it. There was no depth to it, so I added a layer between my legs and the plant pot so I could use the brush to make shadows. I repeated this with the other pot, but as it was further away and more in the sun, I had to so some 'dodging' and 'burning' so that the pasted image would blend in .
Thos was more of an exercise to see if I could take photos cut, copy, paste and blend, so there is no real story behind this image. I also pasted my mate and his 2 kids in the background.
As I had found out through my mother that we were a distant relative of Darwin, I thought I would use Evolution as my basis. I wanted to try and question where you think you came from. I looked through some old suits to try and find one that would slightly resemble one that Darwin might have worn. This wasn't easy but I also wore a monkey mask that I bought for this project. This was to show that man evolved from Ape. Darwin did a big study on Finches (birds), and gathered a huge collection. He did this to show how each different breeds of Finch had beaks slightly different to another, which had been adapted to their feeding needs through evolution. On the right side of the tree there are 2 Finches on a branch, slightly different to another . I then wanted to show the other side where people believe that we did not evolve. To show this I put some apples on the tree with question marks on them, as it was an apple tree in the garden of Eden where Adam took a bite of a bad apple. I was thinking of putting a snake on the tree ( the talking snake from Garden of Eden) but thought I would put a bible on the top to try and pull together the information already there and for it to make sense. I am not sure if I have achieved this or not but it kind of works in my head.
Here I got a picture of ' The Evolution of Man' and pasted a a Drawing of Jesus's head on top. I am not sure what a preacher from the south of America would say, or do, but if he doesn't like it, then he can just appreciate the pretty colours instead!
